Fishing Friends - Blog 2

From the past week, a moment that stands out to me is our entire Thursday fishing trip. It was the first one where we had to wake up early (7am meet up), and drive more than an hour to get to. We fished the Nehalem river, off of Lower Nehalem road, where we found a turnout with a steep trail leading down to the river. We got all our stuff on and prepped our gear and started fishing at around 9am, only to be interrupted by thunder around 30 minutes later. We took a break and then resumed fishing. In reality, it wasn't a great day from an outsider's perspective. As a group, we caught 3 fish, all of which were tiny smolt. It was rainy, windy, and wet, three things that aren't great for fishing, but they day reinforced the point that any day on the water is better than a day at home.

I think I've progressed in all three of my goals. Throughout the project, I've been having a good time and improved my fishing skills just by fishing.  Last week was also a good week for the independence aspect, as our urban fishing on Wednesday didn't go exactly to plan so we had to make some on-the-fly adjustments there. Thursday also proved that we could navigate a lot of moving parts in order to get an early morning fishing trip done.

As the project progresses, I'm wondering if the changing of seasons right now will affect the fish we catch and if we will have more success gear fishing as opposed to fly fishing over the next 2 weeks.

  1. Three cheers for all three of you catching a smolt! What's a smolt? I bet you're absolutely correct about seasons affecting the types of fish you catch - and I would imagine that you're allowed to keep different fish/fish in different places, depending on the time of year. Are any details like that stipulated by your fishing license?

    1. Hello Veronica, a smolt it just a baby trout, so nothing too special. There are some restrictions as to what we can keep and catch, but we haven't run into any issues with that so far, as it's mainly for bigger fish.

  2. Hi, Kellen! The photos tell the tale--pure joy, with some discomforts here and there. I bet it was a treat to be out in a thunderstorm (but not waist deep in water) without anyplace else you had to be. Do you guys talk much, or are you settling into a pattern of quiet? Just curious. Glad you're having fun.
